What are the differences between an AA fund and a 401k plan?

AA is an asset allocation plan.
An AA plan is more diverse than a 401k plan,
The AA plan is something an investor can arrange for themselves.
People are far more capable than decades ago, mutual funds are, but a mouse click away on the Internet. People has access to the stock prices,histories and bonds more readily than they previously would have been.
