In my personal opinion, I think the world would be the same whether we had religion or not.
By nature humans are drawn to their actions by what they believe in, if you take away religion people would still know the difference between good or bad based on other peoples influences and personal experiences. The reason this is true is because we all have one brain and we all interpret things differently, no two minds can truly think alike.
So to say that if the world did not have religion it would be better is a hard decision to make. A set of individuals can be drawn to a common cause, but find they have a similar religion in common, but that alone would not necessarily define their actions.
